In humans, it is divided into three subtypes: RI (CD64), RII (CD32), and RIII (CD16). CD16, specifically CD16a and CD16b, is a low-affinity Fc receptor that binds to the Fc section of IgG antibodies. Depending on the cell type, CD16a is expressed on the surface of NK cells, T cells, monocytes, and macrophages, while CD16b is found in neutrophil polymorphonuclear leukocytes and monocytes/macrophages. CD16a is involved in various immune functions, including phagocytosis, secretion of enzymes and inflammatory mediators, antibody-dependent cytotoxicity, and immune complex clearance. Abnormal expression or mutations in CD16a are associated with an increased susceptibility to recurrent viral infections, systemic lupus erythematosus, and alloimmunized neonatal neutropenia.
