Description	The 20S core structure of the proteasome is a well-organized ring-shaped complex consisting of multiple catalytic proteins. It is made up of four rings, with each ring containing 7 alpha subunits and 7 beta subunits that are not identical. These proteasomes are present in high concentrations throughout eukaryotic cells and play a vital role in the degradation of peptides via a non-lysosomal pathway that relies on ATP and ubiquitin. One specific type of modified proteasome called the immunoproteasome has an essential function in processing class I MHC peptides. This particular gene being discussed is a member of the proteasome B-type family, sometimes referred to as the T1B family, and codes for a 20S core beta subunit. Interestingly, there are multiple transcript variants of this gene, which undergo alternative splicing to produce distinct isoforms.
Other names	Proteasome beta type 2, also known as macropain subunit C7 I or PSB2_HUMAN, is a component of the multicatalytic endopeptidase complex subunit C7 I. This complex is responsible for regulating the degradation of intracellular proteins by breaking them down into smaller peptides. This process is crucial for maintaining normal cellular functions and preventing the accumulation of abnormal or damaged proteins. The proteasome subunit beta type-2 is highly similar to macropain subunit C7-I and plays a critical role in the protein quality control system of the cell. Its importance is highlighted by the fact that defects in its function have been implicated in several neurodegenerative disorders, making it an important target for therapeutic intervention.

Background	Component of the 20S core proteasome complex involved in the proteolytic degradation of most intracellular proteins. This complex plays numerous essential roles within the cell by associating with different regulatory particles. Associated with two 19S regulatory particles, forms the 26S proteasome and thus participates in the ATP-dependent degradation of ubiquitinated proteins. The 26S proteasome plays a key role in the maintenance of protein homeostasis by removing misfolded or damaged proteins that could impair cellular functions, and by removing proteins whose functions are no longer required. Associated with the PA200 or PA28, the 20S proteasome mediates ubiquitin-independent protein degradation.
