This enzyme catalyzes the initial step in the CDP-choline pathway, which is the transfer of cytidine 5'-triphosphate (CTP) to phosphocholine to form CDP-choline. CCT alpha is the isoform of choline phosphate cytidylyltransferase A, which is expressed specifically in mammalian tissues. This enzyme plays a pivotal role in regulating the level of phosphatidylcholine, a critical component of cellular membranes and lipoproteins. In humans, the gene encoding CCT alpha is called PCYT1A. Other names for this gene include CTPCT, PCY1A_HUMAN, Pcyt1a, and phosphorylcholine transferase A.
