Description

Cytochrome c plays a crucial role in electron-transport and is located in the mitochondrial intermembrane space as part of the respiratory chain. However, upon apoptotic stimulation, cytochrome c is released from mitochondria, and it associates with procaspase-9/Apaf 1. Through this complex, caspase-9 is activated from its inactive proenzyme state to its active form. This event triggers the activation of caspase-3, eventually inducing apoptosis. The conserved nature of cytochrome c highlights its importance in cellular death pathways and its potential for therapeutic intervention.

Electron carrier protein. The oxidized form of the cytochrome c heme group can accept an electron from the heme group of the cytochrome c1 subunit of cytochrome reductase. Cytochrome c then transfers this electron to the cytochrome oxidase complex, the final protein carrier in the mitochondrial electron-transport chain.
