The protein encoded by this gene acts as a transcription factor that binds to the sterol regulatory element-1 (SRE1). The SRE1 is a decamer that flanks the low density lipoprotein receptor gene as well as some genes involved in sterol biosynthesis. Initially, this protein is synthesized as a precursor that becomes attached to both the nuclear membrane and the endoplasmic reticulum.

Class D basic helix-loop-helix protein 1, also known as bHLHd1, is a transcription factor that belongs to the Sterol Regulatory Element Binding Transcription Factor 1/Protein 1 family. Its gene is labeled D630008H06 and it is associated with the regulation of lipid metabolism.
Processed Sterol Regulatory Element-Binding Protein 1, also known as SRBP1_HUMAN or SREBP1, is another name for this transcription factor. Other aliases for this protein include SREBF 1, SREBF1, SREBP 1, SREBP-1, and SREBP1c.

Tissue specificity

Expressed in a wide variety of tissues, most abundant in liver and adrenal gland. In fetal tissues lung and liver shows highest expression. Isoform SREBP-1C predominates in liver, adrenal gland and ovary, whereas isoform SREBP-1A predominates in hepatoma cell lines. Isoform SREBP-1A and isoform SREBP-1C are found in kidney, brain, white fat, and muscle.
