The CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein (C/EBP) family of transcription factors includes a gene that acts as a dominant-negative inhibitor. This gene forms heterodimers with other C/EBP members, like C/EBP and LAP, and prevents their DNA binding activity. The gene is involved in adipogenesis and erythropoiesis, and is activated by endoplasmic reticulum stress, ultimately promoting apoptosis. In myxoid liposarcomas or Ewing sarcoma, translocation induces fusion of this gene and FUS on chromosome 16 or EWSR1 on chromosome 22, creating chimeric proteins.
