Target

Background

The pentaspan transmembrane glycoprotein is encoded by this gene. It is a protein that is located in membrane protrusions and is commonly found on adult stem cells. Its main role is believed to be maintaining stem cell properties by inhibiting differentiation. If mutations occur in this gene, it can lead to retinitis pigmentosa and Stargardt disease. Additionally, the expression of this gene is linked to various types of cancer. Interestingly, this gene has at least five alternative promoters that are active in different tissues. This results in multiple variants of transcripts encoding different isoforms for this gene.
