Background | This gene encodes a protein that belongs to the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family. Members of the FGF family have the ability to bind heparin and exhibit broad mitogenic and angiogenic activities. This particular protein is involved in various biological processes such as the development of limbs and the nervous system, wound healing, and tumor growth. The mRNA of this gene contains multiple polyadenylation sites, allowing for alternative translation from non-AUG (CUG) and AUG initiation codons. As a result, five different isoforms with distinct properties are produced. The isoforms initiated by CUG play a role within the nucleus, exhibiting intracrine effects. On the other hand, the isoform initiated by AUG is primarily found in the cytosol and is responsible for the paracrine and autocrine effects of this FGF. |
