Description

This protein serves as a serine protease inhibitor that specifically targets plasminogen activators and plasmin. Unlike thrombin, it has no inhibitory effect on this blood-clotting factor. In addition to its protease-inhibitory function, this protein is thought to play a role in the formation or rearrangement of synaptic connections in the nervous system, as well as in synaptic plasticity in adult brains. There is evidence to suggest that this protein may also provide neuroprotection by preventing damage caused by tissue-type plasminogen activator.
