It is encoded by the MYH9 gene and belongs to the non-muscle myosin heavy chain family. MYH9 is associated with various medical conditions, including DFNA17 (a form of hearing loss) and Epstein syndrome (a disorder affecting blood platelets). Other aliases for MYH9 include EPSTS, FTNS, MGC104539, MHA, MYH 2A, MYH2A, MYHSA 2, and MYHas8. NMMHC A, NMMHC IIa, NMMHC IIA, NMMHC-A, NMMHC-IIA, NMMHCA, and NMHC II A are alternative names for non-muscle myosin heavy chain A.

Background	Cellular myosin that appears to play a role in cytokinesis, cell shape, and specialized functions such as secretion and capping. During cell spreading, plays an important role in cytoskeleton reorganization, focal contacts formation (in the margins but not the central part of spreading cells), and lamellipodial retraction; this function is mechanically antagonized by MYH10.
