| Other names | Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 7A3, mitochondrial, also known as COX7A3, is an important protein involved in cellular respiration. It plays a crucial role in the electron transport chain, specifically in the final step of oxidative phosphorylation. This protein is encoded by the COX7A3 gene and is primarily expressed in the liver and heart. Another variant of this protein is known as COX7AL2, or cytochrome c oxidase subunit VIIa 3. It shares a high degree of similarity with COX7A3 and also participates in the electron transport chain. There is also a similar protein called COX7A2, or cytochrome c oxidase subunit 7A2, which is encoded by the COX7A2 gene. It is localized in the mitochondria and plays a role in mitochondrial respiration. In addition to these variants, there are other isoforms of cytochrome c oxidase subunit VIIa, such as COX7AL and COX7AL1. These isoforms are primarily expressed in the liver and heart and have similar functions to COX7A3. Overall, cytochrome c oxidase subunits, including COX7A3 and COX7A2, are essential components of the mitochondrial electron transport chain. They are crucial for the proper functioning of cellular respiration and energy production. |
