Description

The end point of the mitochondrial respiratory chain is catalyzed by cytochrome c oxidase (COX), which transfers electrons from reduced cytochrome c to oxygen. This complex includes three catalytic subunits encoded by mitochondrial genes and several structural subunits encoded by nuclear genes. While the mitochondrially-encoded subunits play a role in electron transfer, the nuclear-encoded subunits may assist with the regulation and assembly of the complex. Although not a structural subunit, the protein encoded by this nuclear gene is believed to be involved in recruiting copper to mitochondria for incorporation into the COX apoenzyme. The Cox17 protein in mice and rats has a 92% amino acid sequence similarity to this protein. Despite this gene no longer being considered for COX deficiency, a pseudogene COX17P has been identified on chromosome 13.

Cytochrome c oxidase assembly homolog COX17 (S. cerevisiae), also known as COX17, plays a crucial role in the assembly of cytochrome c oxidase. It is a protein involved in the recruitment and transfer of copper ions in the mitochondria. In humans, COX17 is the homolog of the yeast mitochondrial copper recruitment protein. Other aliases for COX17 include COX17 cytochrome c oxidase assembly homolog, COX17 cytochrome c oxidase assembly protein, and Cytochrome c oxidase copper chaperone. It is also referred to as COX17_HUMAN, MGC104397, MGC117386, OTTHUMP00000215284, and OTTHUMP00000215285.
