Description	Amphiregulin (AREG) is a ligand of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and has a crucial role in the development of the mammary gland and the branching morphogenesis in various organs. Its expression is seen in both normal and cancerous tissues. Initially, the AREG protein is synthesized as a 252-amino acid transmembrane precursor known as pro-AREG. Afterward, pro-AREG undergoes successive proteolytic cleavages within its ectodomain while positioned at the plasma membrane. This process results in the release of soluble AREG protein. The production of AREG can vary in terms of cellular and mature forms due to the presence of alternative pro-AREG cleavage sites and glycosylation motifs, which are influenced by the specific cell type and microenvironment.
