Background | This gene encodes a small GTPase belonging to the Rho-subfamily, which plays a crucial role in regulating various cellular functions like cell morphology, migration, endocytosis, and cell cycle progression. It shares a high similarity with Saccharomyces cerevisiae Cdc 42 and can effectively complement the yeast cdc42-1 mutant. Interestingly, the oncogene Dbl has been found to specifically stimulate the release of GDP from this protein. By directly binding to Neural Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein (N-WASP), this protein can potentially control actin polymerization and subsequently activate the Arp2/3 complex. Multiple transcript variants result from alternative splicing of this gene. Additionally, pseudogenes of this gene have been identified on chromosomes 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, and 20. |
Celluar localization | The cell membrane is a crucial component of cells, serving as a barrier between the cell and its environment. Within the cell, the cytoplasm fills the space between the membrane and the various organelles. The cytoplasmic side of the membrane is where membrane-bound proteins are anchored, often using lipid-anchors. The cytoskeleton and microtubule organizing center, which includes the centrosome, play important roles in cell division, with the spindle and midbody forming during mitosis. |
