Background

This gene encodes a protein that is part of the Na+/K+ and H+/K+ ATPases beta chain family. It also belongs to the Na+/K+ -ATPases subfamily. The Na+/K+ -ATPase protein plays a crucial role in maintaining the electrochemical gradients of sodium and potassium ions across the cell membrane. These gradients are important for osmoregulation, the transportation of various molecules, and the electrical excitability of nerves and muscles. The enzyme consists of two subunits: a large catalytic subunit (alpha) and a smaller glycoprotein subunit (beta). The beta subunit is responsible for regulating the number of sodium pumps transported to the cell membrane by forming alpha/beta heterodimers. Multiple genes encode the glycoprotein subunit of Na+/K+ -ATPase, with this gene specifically encoding the beta 1 subunit. Alternative splicing of the transcript variants results in different isoforms, although their biological significance is currently unknown.
