Previously named as opioid receptor sigma 1 (OPRS1), this particular gene was initially assumed to function as an opioid receptor, but it is now believed to be a non-opioid receptor. Mutations in this gene have been linked to juvenile amyotrophic lateral sclerosis 16. Several distinct isoforms are available from alternative splicing of this gene, resulting in transcript variants with unique characteristics.
