Background

The docking and/or fusion of synaptic vesicles with the presynaptic membrane is facilitated by a protein complex consisting primarily of synaptobrevins/VAMPs, syntaxins, and the 25-kD synaptosomal-associated protein. The human counterpart of the rodent cellubrevin has been identified as a member of the vesicle-associated membrane protein (VAMP)/synaptobrevin family due to its high homology to other known VAMPs, subcellular localization, and broad tissue distribution. Interestingly, this protein appears to be uniquely situated in platelets, as it resides on a compartment that is not mobilized to the plasma membrane on calcium or thrombin stimulation.
