Background

Sirtuin proteins, encoded by the Sir2 gene, belong to the sirtuin family and show strong resemblance to the yeast Sir2 protein. The sirtuin family can be divided into four classes, all featuring a sirtuin core domain. Although the precise functions of human sirtuin proteins remain unknown, it is established that yeast sirtuins play a role in regulating epigenetic gene silencing and restraining rDNA recombination. Research indicates that human sirtuins might function as intracellular regulatory proteins possessing mono-ADP-ribosyltransferase activity. In the sirtuin family, this particular gene falls under class IV. Through alternative splicing, multiple transcript variants of this gene are produced.
