Target

Background

The receptor for sonic hedgehog, a secreted molecule involved in embryonic development and cancer, is encoded by this gene. It belongs to the patched gene family and also interacts with desert hedgehog and indian hedgehog proteins. Its main function is as a tumor suppressor. Genetic mutations in this gene have been linked to various conditions including basal cell nevus syndrome, esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, trichoepitheliomas, transitional cell carcinomas of the bladder, and holoprosencephaly. Multiple transcript variants, coding for different isoforms, are produced through alternative splicing. Although there are other described splice variants, their complete sequences and biological significance remain unknown at present.
