Background

This particular gene encodes a secretory protein that is a member of the hyaluronan-binding protein family. It contains a hyaluronan-binding domain that is responsible for the protein's involvement in extracellular matrix stability and cell migration. Research shows that this protein is capable of forming a long-lasting complex with inter-alpha-inhibitor (I alpha I), an important molecule in the protease network related to inflammation. This complex enhances I alpha I's serine protease inhibitory activity. It is worth noting that the expressions of this gene may be induced by proinflammatory cytokines like tumor necrosis factor alpha or interleukin-1. Higher levels of this protein have been identified in the synovial fluids of patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, both of which are known to cause inflammation in affected joints.
