Other names	Thioredoxin reductase 2 (TRXR2), also known as Thioredoxin reductase beta (TR-beta), is a mitochondrial selenoprotein that plays a vital role in redox signaling and maintenance of cellular redox homeostasis. It is encoded by the TXNRD2 gene and is closely related to Thioredoxin reductase 3 (TR 3). TRXR2 belongs to the family of thioredoxin reductases, which are enzymes involved in the reduction of oxidized thioredoxins, thereby facilitating the reduction of disulfide bonds in proteins. As a mitochondrial protein, TRXR2 plays a significant role in protecting mitochondrial function and preventing oxidative damage, thereby ensuring the proper functioning of a cell. Selenoprotein Z (SelZ) is one of the proteins that are regulated by TRXR2. SelZ is a recently discovered protein that seems to have a specific role in the prevention of oxidative stress. Its function is not yet fully understood, but it appears to be involved in protecting the mitochondria from oxidative stress. Overall, understanding the role of TRXR2 and its related proteins such as SelZ is critical to deciphering redox signaling and oxidative stress in cells and the prevention of related pathologies.
