Description | S100 proteins, despite their simple structure and small size, play a crucial role in regulating several cellular processes. These proteins, which range from 8-12 kDa, are involved in cell growth, cell motility, cell cycle progression, transcription, and differentiation. Currently, there are 25 known members of the S100 protein family, including S100A1-S100A18, trichohyalin, filaggrin, repetin, S100P, and S100Z, making it the largest group within the calcium-binding protein family known as EF-hand. Interestingly, 14 of these S100 genes are located on human chromosome 1q21, an area known for genomic instability. Research studies have shown a significant correlation between abnormal S100 protein expression and the progression of cancer. |
| Other names | : Protein S100-B or S100 calcium-binding protein beta (NEF) is a protein chain known as S-100 protein subunit beta or S100 calcium binding protein beta chain. It is also referred to as S100B or S100beta. This protein, coded by the S100B_HUMAN gene, belongs to the S100 family of calcium-binding proteins. It is predominantly expressed in neural tissues. S100B, also known as protein S100 B, protein S100-B, or S100 calcium binding protein beta chain, belongs to the S100 family of calcium-binding proteins. It is encoded by the S100B_HUMAN gene and is predominantly expressed in neural tissues. This protein is alternatively referred to as S-100 protein subunit beta, S 100 protein beta chain, or S100 calcium-binding protein B. Its functions and interactions are linked to its ability to bind calcium ions. In summary, S100B or protein S100-B is a calcium-binding protein found in neural tissues. It is often referred to as S100 calcium binding protein beta chain, S-100 protein beta chain, or S100 calcium-binding protein B. Encoded by the S100B_HUMAN gene, it is a member of the S100 protein family. Its role and interactions are associated with its calcium-binding ability. |

Background | Weakly binds calcium but binds zinc very tightly-distinct binding sites with different affinities exist for both ions on each monomer. Physiological concentrations of potassium ion antagonize the binding of both divalent cations, especially affecting high-affinity calcium-binding sites. Binds to and initiates the activation of STK38 by releasing autoinhibitory intramolecular interactions within the kinase. Interaction with AGER after myocardial infarction may play a role in myocyte apoptosis by activating ERK1/2 and p53/TP53 signaling. Could assist ATAD3A cytoplasmic processing, preventing aggregation and favoring mitochondrial localization. May mediate calcium-dependent regulation on many physiological processes by interacting with other proteins, such as TPR-containing proteins, and modulating their activity. |
| Tissue specificity | Although predominant among the water-soluble brain proteins, S100 is also found in a variety of other tissues. |
