Target
Background	Plays a crucial role in facilitating the export of signal peptide-lacking proteins through an alternative pathway. This protein has the ability to bind two calcium ions per subunit and can also bind one copper ion. Remarkably, the binding of copper does not interfere with calcium binding. It is particularly necessary for the stress-induced export of IL1A and FGF1, which rely on copper for their secretion. Interestingly, when devoid of calcium, the protein can bind to lipid vesicles containing phosphatidylserine but not those containing phosphatidylcholine (similar findings are reported in related studies).
