Other namesThe protein coded by the C21orf43 gene is known as Junction Adhesion Molecule 2 or JAM-2. It is also referred to as CD322 or CD322 antigen. JAM-2 is an integral membrane protein that plays a crucial role in the formation of tight junctions between endothelial cells.
JAM-2 is expressed on the surface of leukocytes, platelets, and vascular endothelial cells. It is involved in leukocyte trafficking, cell adhesion, and platelet activation. JAM-2 belongs to the family of Junctional Adhesion Molecules (JAMs), which also includes JAM-A and JAM-C.
JAM-2 is composed of two extracellular immunoglobulin-like domains, a single transmembrane segment, and a short cytoplasmic tail. JAM-2 mediates interactions between neighboring cells through homophilic binding.
Junctional Adhesion Molecule B (JAM-B) is another name for JAM-2. It is also referred to as vascular endothelial JAM, VE-JAM, VE-Junction Associated Molecule, or PRO 245. JAM-B is expressed on the surface of endothelial and epithelial cells and plays a crucial role in the formation of tight junctions between cells.
Overall, JAM-2 and JAM-B are key players in maintaining the integrity of tight junctions and regulating leukocyte migration through the endothelium. Dysfunction of these proteins has been implicated in various immune and cardiovascular diseases.
