This protein is also found naturally in human blood and has been identified as a key regulator of the complement cascade. One of its primary functions is to prevent the binding of a C5b-C7 complex to the surface of target cells. This, in turn, helps prevent the occurrence of complement-mediated cytolysis, providing vital protection against unwanted immune responses.
Apolipoprotein J is overexpressed in human prostate and breast cancers and in squamous cell carcinomas. Suppression of Apolipoprotein J renders these cells sensitive to chemotherapeutic drug-mediated apoptosis.
