It is a homodimeric, heparin-binding protein that specifically acts on endothelial cells and has various effects on angiogenesis, vasculogenesis, permeabilization of blood vessels, and endothelial cell growth. VEGF121 is a glycosylated mitogen that induces increased vascular permeability, promotes cell migration, and inhibits apoptosis. Its alternatively spliced transcript variants encode either secreted or cell-associated isoforms. Upregulation of VEGF121 may promote lymphangiogenesis, which may induce VEGF-C.
