Background

In chickens, the functional equivalent of Immunoglobulin G (IgG) is Immunoglobulin Y. Both immunoglobulins are composed of two light and two heavy chains, but structurally, IgY has larger heavy chains with a molecular mass of about 65,100 atomic mass units (amu) compared to IgG. The light chains in IgY are somewhat smaller than those in IgG, with a molar mass of around 18,700 amu, resulting in a molar mass of about 167,000 amu for IgY. Although IgY is partially comparable to Immunoglobulin E (IgE) and IgG in terms of function, it does not bind to certain receptors like IgG does. IgY also has less steric flexibility compared to IgG.
