Other names	The protein bHLHa17 is also known as Stem cell protein or T cell acute lymphocytic leukemia 1 protein. It belongs to the Class A basic helix-loop-helix family of transcription factors. Another name for it is T cell leukemia/lymphoma 5 protein. The gene encoding this protein is known as Scl or STEM CELL LEUKEMIA HEMATOPOIETIC TRANSCRIPTION FACTOR. Its primary function is to regulate the differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells into the various cells of the immune system. The protein is also involved in the development of T-cell acute lymphocytic leukemia. TAL-1 is a shorthand for T cell acute lymphocytic leukemia 1 and refers to the same protein. It is sometimes abbreviated as TCL5.
