Description

StAR, also known as steroidogenic acute regulatory protein, is crucial in facilitating the transport of cholesterol from the cytoplasmic outer membrane to the inner mitochondrial membrane. This protein plays a key role in cholesterol metabolism and can transform cholesterol into pregnenolone, with an active 28 kDa protein being generated from a 37 kDa precursor. Its predominant expression occurs in the mitochondria of steroid-producing gonadal and adrenal tissue.
In cases of autosomal Lipoid Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (LCAH), the StAR gene expression can be adversely affected, resulting in defects in the production of cortisol and pregnenolone. Despite extensive research, the exact mechanism of how StAR binds to cholesterol still remains unknown.

Other namesSteroidogenic acute regulatory protein, commonly known as StAR or StAR-related lipid transfer (START) domain-containing protein 1, is a cholesterol trafficker and luteinizing hormone-induced protein. It is primarily found in the mitochondria and plays a crucial role in steroid hormone synthesis. StAR facilitates the transfer of cholesterol into the mitochondria, where it is converted into steroid hormones such as cortisol, estrogen, and testosterone. This mitochondrial steroid acute regulatory protein acts as a key regulator in the production of these hormones, ensuring their availability for various physiological processes. StAR is an essential component of the steroidogenic pathway and is responsible for maintaining hormonal balance and homeostasis. Its vital role in cholesterol trafficking and steroidogenesis highlights the significance of this protein in endocrine function.
