Description | Hyaluronidase is responsible for breaking down hyaluronic acid, a significant structural component of extracellular matrices and basement membranes. There are six members of the hyaluronidase family divided into two closely linked groups on chromosome 3p21.3 and 7q31.3. The official symbol for this gene is SPAM1, previously known as HYAL1 and HYA1. Another family member located on chromosome 3p21.3 is designated HYAL1. This gene codes for a GPI-anchored enzyme situated on the inner acrosomal membrane and surface of human sperm. This multifaceted protein acts as a hyaluronidase, which facilitates the penetration of sperm through the hyaluronic acid-rich cumulus cell layer around the oocyte. Additionally, it acts as a receptor that plays a part in cell signaling induced by hyaluronic acid and is involved in the adhesion of sperm to the zona pellucida. Its abnormal expression in tumors is linked to the degradation of basement membranes, culminating in tumor invasion and metastasis.
