Other names	A1A, also known as Alpha 1 antitrypsin or Serpin A1, is a serine proteinase inhibitor that belongs to the clade A member 1 group of serine protease inhibitors. It is also referred to as Alpha-1-antiproteinase or Alpha 1 protease inhibitor and is encoded by the Serpina1 gene in humans. A1A's main function is to protect the body's tissues from damage caused by its own enzymes. It does this by inhibiting the activity of proteases, which are enzymes that break down proteins. A1A deficiency can lead to a variety of disease conditions including emphysema, liver disease, and neonatal jaundice. A1AT is a variant of A1A that is often used as a diagnostic marker for A1A deficiency. In addition, A1AT has been implicated in the regulation of immune responses and has potential therapeutic applications in the treatment of inflammatory diseases. Other synonyms for A1A include alpha1 proteinase inhibitor, PI, and SPAAT.

Background	Inhibitor of serine proteases. Its primary target is elastase, but it also has a moderate affinity for plasmin and thrombin. Irreversibly inhibits trypsin, chymotrypsin and plasminogen activator. The aberrant form inhibits insulin-induced NO synthesis in platelets, decreases coagulation time and has proteolytic activity against insulin and plasmin.
