Description	The proteasome is a complex enzyme that is made up of a highly organized ring-shaped 20S core structure. Comprised of 28 subunits, the core structure contains 4 rings, with 2 consisting of 7 alpha subunits and the other 2 composed of 7 beta subunits. Ubiquitously distributed throughout eukaryotic cells, proteasomes perform the non-lysosomal cleavage of peptides in an ATP/ubiquitin-dependent process. The immunoproteasome, which is a modified proteasome, plays a critical role in the processing of class I MHC peptides. One of the peptidase T1A family's members includes this gene, which encodes a 20S core alpha subunit. Numerous transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms are a result of alternative splicing.
Other names	The protein HC 2, also known as 30 kDa prosomal protein, has various aliases such as HC2, Macropain subunit C2, and Macropain subunit nu. It is encoded by genes MGC14542, MGC14575, MGC14751, MGC1667, MGC21459, MGC22853, and MGC23915. This protein is a component of the multicatalytic endopeptidase complex and is associated with proteasome function. Target
Background	Component of the 20S core proteasome complex involved in the proteolytic degradation of most intracellular proteins. This complex plays numerous essential roles within the cell by associating with different regulatory particles. Associated with two 19S regulatory particles, forms the 26S proteasome and thus participates in the ATP-dependent degradation of ubiquitinated proteins. The 26S proteasome plays a key role in the maintenance of protein homeostasis by removing misfolded or damaged proteins that could impair cellular functions, and by removing proteins whose functions are no longer required. Associated with the PA200 or PA28, the 20S proteasome mediates ubiquitin-independent protein degradation. This type of proteolysis is required in several pathways including spermatogenesis (20S-PA200 complex) or generation of a subset of MHC class I-presented antigenic peptides (20S-PA28 complex).
