It belongs to the DBI-related protein family and is involved in the isomerization of 2-trans-enoyl-CoA to its cis-isomer. ACBD2 has been found to be present in both peroxisomes and mitochondria, where it participates in beta-oxidation of fatty acids. In addition, ACBD2 is associated with hepatocellular carcinoma and renal carcinoma. The protein is encoded by the ECI2 gene and is also referred to as Enoyl-CoA delta isomerase 2 or dodecenoyl-CoA isomerase. ACBD2 has been shown to possess acyl Coenzyme A binding properties and is likely to be involved in the transport of acyl Coenzyme A between cellular compartments.
