| Other names | Neurophysin 1, also known as neurophysin I, is encoded by the genes MGC126890 and MGC126892. This protein is involved in the synthesis and secretion of oxytocin (OT), a neuropeptide that plays a key role in social bonding and reproductive functions. OT is produced as a prepropeptide, which is processed into the mature peptide and a carrier protein known as neurophysin 1. The oxytocin-neurophysin 1 complex is transported down axons and stored in the posterior pituitary gland, where it can be released into the bloodstream in response to various stimuli. Once released, OT acts on specific receptors in target tissues such as the uterus and mammary glands, promoting uterine contractions during labor and milk ejection during lactation. Research has also implicated OT in social behaviors such as trust, empathy, and pair bonding. Dysregulation of OT signaling has been associated with several psychiatric disorders, including autism, schizophrenia, and depression. As such, understanding the mechanisms underlying OT synthesis and release may have important implications for the treatment of these disorders. |
