The MAOB gene encodes a protein weighing 58.8 kD and comprised of 520 amino acids. This protein is highly similar to MAOA, exhibiting 70% amino acid identity, and both enzymes are found in the outer mitochondrial membrane of the central nervous system and peripheral tissues. Examination of purified MAOA and MAOB from human placenta and liver, respectively, reveals a size difference of 2 kDa in the larger A form and a single potential N-glycosylation site in each protein, situated at different key locations.
