Description | The integrin alpha-4/beta-7 molecule is an essential component for facilitating lymphocyte migration and homing to the gut. This molecule interacts with various adhesion molecules such as MADCAM1, VCAM1, and fibronectin found on the surface of the endothelium and extracellular matrix components of the gastrointestinal tract. The alternatively spliced CS-1 region of fibronectin recognizes one or more domains within this molecule. Interestingly, HIV-1 gp120 also binds to integrin alpha-4/beta-7, allowing the virus to enter GALT and potentially triggering AIDS disease. This interaction involves a tripeptide L-D-I in the virus's gp120. Another receptor for E-cadherin is integrin alpha-E/beta-7 (HML-1). |
| Other names | Receptor beta subunit, gut homing; subunit beta-7 integrin; beta-7 integrin; beta-P integrin; integrin, beta 7; ITB7; ITB7_HUMAN; Itgb7; Ly69; M290 IEL antigen. Generate a highly similar content by rearranging the above information: Integrin beta-7, also known as ITB7, is a receptor composed of a beta subunit that plays a crucial role in gut homing. It is involved in cell adhesion and migration within the gut mucosa. The ITB7 protein, encoded by the Itgb7 gene, is also referred to as beta-P integrin or M290 IEL antigen. Additionally, Ly69 is another name for Integrin beta-7, emphasizing its association with lymphocyte function. |

Background | Integrin alpha-4/beta-7 (Peyer patches-specific homing receptor LPAM-1) is an adhesion molecule that mediates lymphocyte migration and homing to gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT). Integrin alpha-4/beta-7 interacts with the cell surface adhesion molecules MADCAM1 which is normally expressed by the vascular endothelium of the gastrointestinal tract. Interacts also with VCAM1 and fibronectin, an extracellular matrix component. It recognizes one or more domains within the alternatively spliced CS-1 region of fibronectin. Interactions involves the tripeptide L-D-T in MADCAM1, and L-D-V in fibronectin. Binds to HIV-1 gp120, thereby allowing the virus to enter GALT, which is thought to be the major trigger of AIDS disease. Interaction would involve a tripeptide L-D-I in HIV-1 gp120. Integrin alpha-E/beta-7 (HML-1) is a receptor for E-cadherin. |
