Target
Background	This cytokine is extremely important in maintaining innate immunity within the epithelium, specifically when it comes to combating intestinal bacterial pathogens. This effect is achieved by signaling through pathways such as NF-kappa-B and MAPK. Interestingly, when working in tandem with other cytokines such as IL22, TNF, and IL1B, it can enhance the expression of various antibacterial peptides. However, it is important to note that under certain circumstances, IL17C/IL17RE signaling may actually contribute to susceptibility to autoimmune diseases. Despite this potential negative outcome, this cytokine overall is a key player in maintaining the equilibrium of the epithelium, allowing it to effectively combat inflammatory challenges.
Tissue specificity	Up-regulated by bacterial stimuli, including by lipopolysaccharides (LPS) in gut epithelial cell lines. This up-regulation may be mediated by Toll-like receptors TLR2 and TLR5. Up-regulated by various proinflammatory cytokines, including TNF, IL1B and IL17F. Up-regulation by IL17A in colon epithelial cells has been observed in some cases (PubMed:21993849), but not in others (PubMed:21993848).
