GFAT1 is encoded by the GFPT1 gene and belongs to the glutamine-fructose-6-phosphate aminotransferase family. D-Fructose-6-phosphate amidotransferase 1, or GFA, is another name used for GFAT1. It catalyzes the conversion of fructose-6-phosphate and glutamine into glucosamine-6-phosphate and glutamate. The GFAT1m is a mitochondrial isoform of the enzyme. GFAT1 plays a crucial role in the regulation of glucose and energy metabolism. Its expression is upregulated in response to glucose and insulin stimulation, and it has been implicated in the development of insulin resistance and diabetes. Mutations in the GFPT1 gene have been associated with skeletal dysplasias, specifically with the Schwartz-Jampel syndrome. GFAT1 has also been shown to play a role in tumorigenesis, angiogenesis, and inflammation.
