This protein is encoded by the EIF2B2 gene and is a subunit of a heteropentameric complex called eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2B (EIF2B). The protein is 39 kilodaltons in size and is composed of 339 amino acids. In humans, EIF 2Bbeta is expressed in a wide range of tissues, including the brain, heart, liver, kidney, and pancreas. Mutations in the EIF2B2 gene can lead to a rare genetic disorder known as leukoencephalopathy with vanishing white matter (VWM). This disorder is characterized by the destruction of white matter in the brain, which causes severe neurological symptoms, including cognitive impairment, ataxia, and spasticity. Overall, EIF 2Bbeta is an important protein that plays a crucial role in protein synthesis and is essential for the proper functioning of cells.
