| Other names | Choline kinase beta (CHKB), also known as Chetk-beta or Chkb protein, is an important enzyme involved in the metabolism of choline and ethanolamine. It plays a crucial role in the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine, a major component of cell membranes. CHKB is encoded by the CHKB gene in humans and is also referred to as CHKB_HUMAN or Choline kinase-like (Chkl) protein. The Choline kinase beta enzyme, also called Choline/Ethanolamine Kinase (CK/EK-beta), is closely related to Ethanolamine kinase (EK) and shares similarities in their functions. These enzymes are responsible for phosphorylating choline and ethanolamine to produce phosphocholine and phosphoethanolamine, respectively. The Choline/Ethanolamine Kinase beta (CKEKB) variant is specifically associated with the beta isoform of this enzyme. Studies have shown that mutations in the CHKB gene can lead to various disorders, such as Muscular Dystrophy, Congenital, Merosin-Deficient (MDCMC). This condition is characterized by muscle weakness and impaired motor function. Understanding the role of Choline kinase beta and its isoforms, as well as its association with diseases, is crucial for further research and potential therapeutic interventions. Overall, the Choline kinase beta enzyme and its related proteins play essential roles in cellular metabolism and have implications in human health and diseases. |

Background | Has a key role in phospholipid biosynthesis. Catalyzes the first step in phosphatidylethanolamine biosynthesis. Phosphorylates ethanolamine, and can also act on choline (in vitro). Has higher activity with ethanolamine. May not significantly contribute to in vivo phosphatidylcholine biosynthesis. |
