| Other names | Adipsin, also known as complement factor D, CFAD_HUMAN, CFD, or D component of complement, is an important protein that plays a crucial role in the complement system. This protein is also referred to as Adn or PFD. As a C3 convertase activator, Adipsin is responsible for the activation of the complement system which helps to remove foreign microbes and damaged cells from the body. Moreover, it serves as a properdin factor D by stabilizing the C3 convertase complex. The Adipsin protein is encoded by the CFD gene and is synthesized as a preproprotein. It is then cleaved into the mature form, which is a serine protease that belongs to the chymotrypsin family. Adipsin is widely distributed throughout the body and has been found to be expressed in a variety of tissues including adipose tissue, spleen, liver, and kidney. Dysfunction of the Adipsin protein has been implicated in various diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. In summary, Adipsin is an essential protein that is responsible for the proper functioning of the complement system, and its dysregulation can contribute to several pathological conditions. |

Background | Factor D cleaves factor B when the latter is complexed with factor C3b, activating the C3bbb complex, which then becomes the C3 convertase of the alternate pathway. Its function is homologous to that of C1s in the classical pathway. |
