Target
Background	This protein, known as sialomucin, is thought to play a critical role in hematopoiesis by promoting the adhesion of CD34+ cells to the stroma and, in turn, controlling their proliferation. It also appears to be involved in modulating the migration of CD133+ cells found in umbilical cord blood, by acting on the CXCL12/CXCR4 axis. Furthermore, this protein may play a role in the spread of prostate cancer and the invasion of bone marrow by cancer cells. Interestingly, it has been shown to promote myogenosis by facilitating motility and fusion of cells, via enhancement of CXCR4-dependent mechanisms. Overall, this suggests that sialomucin is an important factor in a variety of biological processes, potentially serving as a therapeutic target for diseases ranging from hematopoietic disorders to cancer.
Tissue specificity	Isoform 1 and isoform 3 are expressed in hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic tissues. Isoform 1 is expressed by prostate cancer tumors and prostate cancer cell lines.
