It is a growth/differentiation factor that plays a pivotal role in bone development and regeneration. The protein is encoded by the GDF10 gene and it is a member of the BMP family. BMP-3b is a precursor protein that undergoes post-translational modifications to produce an active protein. The protein is produced by several cell types including osteoblasts, chondrocytes, and mesenchymal stem cells. The protein is secreted into the extracellular matrix where it acts as a signaling molecule. BMP-3b is involved in the regulation of bone development, formation and homeostasis.
