Other names	The beta secretase, also known as Asp 2 or ASP2, is an aspartyl protease that is encoded by the BACE1 gene in humans. It is also referred to as BACE1, Beta site amyloid precursor protein cleaving enzyme 1, or Beta site amyloid beta A4 precursor protein cleaving enzyme. The enzyme plays a critical role in the cleavage of amyloid precursor protein, producing amyloid beta peptides which are implicated in the development of Alzheimer's disease. Other names for beta secretase include Beta site APP cleaving enzyme 1, Beta site APP cleaving enzyme, Beta-secretase 1, Beta-site amyloid precursor protein cleaving enzyme 1, and Beta-site APP cleaving enzyme 1. It is also known by the aliases FLJ90568, HSPC104, Memapsin 2, Memapsin-2, Memapsin2, Membrane associated aspartic protease 2, and Transmembrane aspartic proteinase Asp2. Beta secretase is a membrane-associated aspartic protease 2, and its identification has been instrumental in the development of therapeutic approaches to the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Background	Responsible for the proteolytic processing of the amyloid precursor protein (APP).
