| Other names | ARF guanine nucleotide exchange factor 2, also known as BIG2, is an enzyme that plays a critical role in the intracellular trafficking of proteins. It is a member of the ADP ribosylation factor guanine nucleotide exchange factor family, which is involved in the regulation of vesicle transport and organelle structure. BIG2 is inhibited by brefeldin A, a fungal metabolite that disrupts the Golgi apparatus and inhibits protein secretion. The gene for BIG2, known as ARFGEF2, is located on chromosome 3 and encodes a 1834 amino acid protein. It is expressed in a variety of tissues, including the brain, liver, and pancreas. Mutations in ARFGEF2 have been associated with a range of diseases, including neurological disorders, developmental delay, and cancer. Understanding the function of BIG2 may lead to new therapies for these conditions. |
