Dnm1p/Vps1p-like protein, also known as Dynamin-1-like protein or DVLP, is a member of the Dynamin family. It is characterized by the absence of a proline-rich carboxyl-terminal domain, unlike other members. There is another related protein called Dymple, which shares similarities with both Dynamin and DVLP. Additionally, there is a Dynamin-like protein 4, known as Dynamin-like protein IV or HdynIV. It is noteworthy that Dynamin-related protein 1, denoted as DNM1L or DLP1, is also connected to this family. Another alias for DNM1L is DRP1. Consequently, these various names are often used interchangeably to refer to the same protein.

This protein plays a crucial role in fission of both mitochondrial and peroxisomal membranes. It forms tubular structures that surround the site of fission, constricting and severing the membrane by utilizing GTP hydrolysis. The importance of its function in mitochondrial division is underscored by its role in protecting neurons from oxidative damage. It is essential for normal brain development, particularly that of the cerebellum, and facilitates apoptosis during neural tube formation. The protein is also required for proper mitochondria fission during mitosis and facilitates endocytic vesicle formation. In addition, it has been linked to the regulation of synaptic vesicle membrane dynamics through its interaction with BCL2L1 isoform Bcl-X(L). Finally, the protein plays a role in the execution of programmed necrosis.
