Background

The GTPase-activating protein (GAP) encoded by this gene is a member of the rhoGAP protein family, which plays an important role in the regulation of small GTP-binding proteins. These proteins are involved in signaling pathways that control various cell processes related to changes in cytoskeletal structures. It has been found to function as a tumor suppressor gene in several common types of cancer, such as prostate, lung, colorectal, and breast cancers. Alternative promoters and alternative splicing give rise to multiple transcript variants for this gene.
