Description	This particular gene belongs to the selenium-binding protein family. Selenium is a crucial nutrient known for its powerful anticarcinogenic capabilities, and a lack of selenium in the body has been linked to certain neurological diseases. The role of selenium-binding proteins may be instrumental in preventing cancer and neurological conditions, and reduced expression of this gene is associated with various forms of cancer. The protein encoded by this gene probably plays an essential part in ubiquitination/deubiquitination-mediated protein degradation, which also relies on selenium. Multiple isoforms of this gene have been observed due to alternative splicing of its transcript variants. These findings are based on RefSeq data obtained in April of 2012.
