This protein is classified under the Transmembrane BAX inhibitor motif-containing protein 4 (TMBIM4) family, which also includes Protein lifeguard 4 (LFG4) and Z-protein (ZPRO). In addition to its anti-apoptotic role, GAAP is also involved in the modulation of calcium homeostasis in cells.
