Description	FAM3B, also known as ORF9, C21orf11, or PANDER, is a secreted protein consisting of 235 amino acids. It is mainly found in discrete vesicular and perinuclear structures. FAM3B is highly expressed in the pancreas and has lower levels of expression in the kidney, colon, testis, prostate, and small intestine. It serves as an islet-specific cytokine that has the ability to induce apoptosis and potentially inhibit insulin secretion from beta-cells. This suggests its involvement in regulating overall pancreatic activity. Interestingly, human FAM3B exhibits a significant 78% sequence similarity with its mouse counterpart, indicating a conserved role across different species. The gene encoding FAM3B is located on human chromosome 21, which is responsible for housing around 300 genes and constitutes around 1.5% of the entire human genome. Consequently, three isoforms of FAM3B, namely A, B, and C, arise due to alternative splicing events.
